Description
Napoleon Family Double Barrel Flintlock Game Gun by Baucheron, Paris.Serial no. 1405. Approximately 20 gauge. 31 ½-inch Damascus finish barrels with bead front sight. Top of barrels are inlaid in gold "BAUCHERON PARIS" and with a gold inlayed "[CROWN] / N" (Boucheron was a Paris gun maker in business from 1823-26, previously with Boutet, 1793-1813) and sovereign's crown over large capital "N" toward breech end of high wide concave rib. The bottoms of barrels are stamped with the serial number, "CK" and "739". The barrel is fitted with two ramrod ferrules with sling mount attached to the lower ferrule. Locks are engraved with game scenes and "BAUCHERON" is inlaid in gold under each pan. Ornately shaped hammers with floral engraving. The steel trigger guard is finely engraved with hunting scenes finished with a pineapple finial. Forestock finished with finely engraved steel pineapple finial. Steel buttplate with complementary engraving and a small goat. Finely figured walnut stock with checkered wrist. Cheek plate inlaid with coin silver "N" surmounted by the Napoleonic crown and flourishes. Coin silver escutcheon with engraved "N" inlayed in the stock just behind the breech. Ebony ramrod with brass tip and tail, which has cap covering steel worm. Drop at heel: 2 5/8-inches, drop at comb: 1 ¼-inches. Weight: 7 pounds, 14 ounces. LOP 14 1/8-inch.
One can speculate the gun was made for Napoleon I's son (1811-1832), or possibly for his nephew, Napoleon III (1808-1873), as Baucheron started business 2 years after death of Napoleon I. The gun is accompanied by an undated letter from Hammer Galleries, New York indicating the gun came from the collection of H.S. Barton of Owensboro, Kentucky, who was a large distillery owner.
Condition: Good. Gun appears to be a very old re-conversion to flint, as quality of workmanship on cocks, pans, frizzens, and breech plugs is not commensurate with remainder of gun. At any rate, some work has been done in the past. The barrels have achieved a nice brown patina but retaining good definition to the Damascus finish. Locks appear to have been polished, but retain some case color. Stock furniture is mostly gray to brown patina. Stock shows an older re-finish, and retains most of that finish, but with many cracks and repairs around the locks and fore-end finial. Checkering is considerably worn, and somewhat sanded on right side. The barrels do not fit snug to the breech as they should. The coin silver inlay on the right side of the butt is being forces up slightly due to the normal shrinkage of the stock. Bores are very fine with some striations and light pitting. Locks are crisp. Frizzens are a bit sticky.
