Description
Important Engraved Majors Russell & Co. Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun.Unserialized, 10 gauge, 31 1/2-inch brown patina damascus barrels with fixed front bead sight. Top of barrels marked: LONDON FINE TWIST with scroll accents. Elaborately scroll engraved hammers, receiver, upper tang and triggerguard. Each side of receiver marked: MAJORS / RUSSELL / & CO. Dual triggers. Checkered walnut straight stock and splinter fire-end with silver accents. Brass-tipped wood ramrod. Metal buttplate.
This rare gun was made for the company which preceded the originators of the Pony Express and was most likely used to guard the stagecoaches operated by that company. It can be dated to 1859 by a receipt from that year located in the Huntington Library. The receipt lists the purchase of a single shotgun, believed to be this example. It was purchased by the late owner from Witherell's in the 1990s, and comes with their detailed letter of expertise. It is believed to be the only known shotgun conclusively identified to this legendary firm according to the curators of the Wells Fargo Museum.
A lovely weapon with great display presence, worthy of the most advanced American firearms or Old West collector.
Condition: Very good. Overall showing scattered signs of age, handling wear and patches of pitting. The rib shows old re-soldering and re-pinning at the breech. Noticeable scuffs, dings and scratches present to wood. Actions good. Lightly pitted bores.
