Description

Baker Three-Barrel Gun With King Ranch Property Marks, Circa 1880. The famed King Ranch had its beginning in 1852 when Richard King and Gideon Lewis set up a cattle camp on the Santa Gertrudis Creek in south Texas. Formal purchase began in 1853 when the men bought a Spanish land grant, Rincón de Santa Gertrudis of more than 15,000 acres on Santa Gertrudis Creek in Nueces County. Shortly afterwards they purchased the Garza Santa Gertrudis grant of 53,000 acres. In 1860 all titles were put under the name R. King and Company, which brings us to this rather interesting Baker three-barrel gun. The gun bears all the traces of a working ranch weapon showing signs of expedient modification and heavy use. The gun features 19.75" English stub twist barrels; two of 12 gauge, the rifle being Winchester .44 (.44-40) caliber. The overall length of the gun is 37.25". The barrel and frame serial numbers match - 1470; and there is a patent date of December 18, 1877 stamped on the frame. The top of the barrels are marked "L. C. SMITH MAKER THE BAKER GUN SYRACUSE STUB TWIST". This is a Quality 1 model with no engraving or checking. The left side of the black walnut stock is stamped "R KING" and additionally stamped "ST GERD" in half inch tall letters, the property marks of the King Ranch of the period. The barrels have been shortened from the original length of approximately 30" and the rear sight mount has been lead filled. The fore-end is lacking. The metal has an overall grey finish with a few shallow dents. The percussion mechanism still functions properly, though certainly no collector would attempt to fire it. In short, a well-used gun from the historic King Ranch.
