Description
"Tennessee Night Riders": A Pump-Action Shotgun with a Dark History. The movement, which the press dubbed the "Night Riders" because of their nocturnal activities, was organized in 1904 by a doctor and a farmer named David Amoss. Their purpose was to crystallize resistance to the monopolistic practices of the American Tobacco Company which set the prices paid to tobacco farmers at artificially low levels. As the conflict escalated, the Night Riders took to burning crops and tobacco warehouses, often taking over whole towns and harshly intimidating the citizenry. Often on horseback and hooded to protect their identities, the tactics of the Night Riders in some ways were not unlike those of the Ku Klux Klan. By 1908, their efforts were so successful that 35,000 farmers in 30 counties supported the boycott, and after an entire season's crop was sacrificed, the Company accepted many of their demands. The home of Dr. Amoss became a museum. Various Tennessee and Kentucky museums and historical societies displayed Night Rider artifacts.The shotgun and lantern offered here were used by one of the Night Riders, Sam Applewhite, and are accompanied by a Letter of Provenance from his great-grandson, Rick Deen. Also included is a fascinating book written by Deen's mother, Shirley Applewhite, which relates the history of the Night Riders as well as the dark tale of this gun. A 1901 photo showing Sam Applewhite posed with the shotgun appears on p. 81 of her book, along with rare images of hooded Night Riders. Applewhite later became a drunkard who so abused his wife that his 14-year-old son killed him with this shotgun to bring it to an end. Much of the book is devoted to the trial and fate of Applewhite. A unique artifact from an important chapter in Tennessee history.
