Description

USS Constitution 1798 Receipt For "sundry material certificate seals...". One page, partially printed, 7" x .5.", Boston, Massachusetts, August 14, 1798. Printed on watermarked laid paper. The receipt reads in full: "Received of Henry Jackson, Naval Agent for the United States, at Boston, Seven Dolls. in full for sundry material certificates seals of sundry charter parties, accounts in relation [illegible]. Frigate Constitution for which I have signed triplicate Receipts of the same tenor and date. Saml. Cooper". Two small areas of mounting remnants at the top corners on the verso and with an old fold crease, otherwise in fine condition.

Barely at the end of her fitting out period and having to borrow guns before sailing, the Constitution was ordered to sea on July 22, 1798 to patrol the Eastern seaboard between New Hampshire and New York, on the lookout for armed French ships preying on merchant vessels. On September 8, 1798 the Constitution captured her first prize off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina. This receipt was issued during this historic ship's first operational cruise and two weeks before her first operation victory.
