Description

Zachary Taylor: A Beautiful and Unusual Mantle Clock with Reverse on Glass Portrait. From the 1830s through the 1850s, a number of companies produced clocks that incorporated reverse on glass portraits of presidents and statesmen into their design. We have not seen this particular variety previously. It is an especially appealing one, with Taylor's profile flanked by draped American flags, while an eagle above clutches both the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.

Condition is quite good, with only some trivial flaking on the original dial and scattered tiny paint flakes on the flags and eagle. Taylor's portrait has some flaking concentrated on his white hair. Of course this missing paint is easily in-painted from the back if one wishes, and such restoration would be all but invisible from the front. The original maker's label inside indicates that the clock was made and sold by William S. Johnson of New York City. The works and pendulum are present, but not the weights and it should be presumed that the clock is not in working order. However, the walnut veneer case is in excellent overall condition save for broken hinges on the doo. The clock has a fine display presence. Height 19", diameter 10".
