Description

Winfield Scott: Pictorial Campaign Handkerchief. Wonderful, excessively rare campaign textile for the 1852 Whig. It measures 14.5" x 14.5". Published by George Adams of Massachusetts. The floral border lists the "Presidents of the United States" including "1853-Scott-1857". Scott is featured above another cut showing the Capitol, State Seals and a display of flags. The caption below Scott's portrait leaves no doubt as to the purpose of this artifact: "Triumphant in War, yet the constant advocate of Peace. Ever victorious over his country's foes, his courage has only been exceeded by his humanity; the Nation will not fail to honor the man whom even its enemies cannot reproach." The back side is printed with a nursery rhyme: "Old Mother Hubbard." Scattered ink stains, some of which have created small holes, more pronounced on the back side. The Scott side displays rather well.
