Description

U. S. Flags: Superlative 33-Star Silk Flag. 40.5" x 32.5" silk flag with 33 stars (active February 14, 1859 to January 29, 1861). Completely machine sewn (sewing machines were invented in the late 1850's and available to the well-to-do). The stripes are composed of salmon and white ribbon material which is identical to fabric used to make political ribbons circa 1860. They have borders with decorative loops. Apparently, the maker of this flag had access to bolts of ribbon stock and simply cut them to the desired length and stitched them together in an alternating pattern. The stars are painted in gold on each side of the blue canton using the "Great Star" pattern. There are pairs of cords at the left corners. There are some scattered light stains. The overall condition is superb which, given its age and material, is quite remarkable!
