Description

Thomas Paine: Scarce 1796 Satirical Token. No. 1796-7 in Sullivan-DeWitt. Obverse shows a pig trampling on a pile with crown and other royal accoutrements, with Liberty Cap above. Reverse reads, "Advocates for the Rights of Man, Thomas Spence, Sir Thomas More, Thomas Paine." Struck in Britain, but imported for political use here. Fine condition, with pleasing color and patina. Size: 31 mm.
