Nobel Prize Medal and Diploma Awarded to Paul A. Samuelson. Paul A. Samuelson was awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel in 1970 for his work in static and dynamic economic theory and contributions toward economic analysis. The gold medal's obverse features a left-facing portrait of Alfred Nobel with the text "Sveriges Riksbank Till Alfred Nobels Minne 1968," following the curvature of the piece in raised letters. A pair of cornucopias brimming with a fruitful harvest are below Nobel's portrait. "Paul A. Samuelson 1970" is engraved along the rim. The reverse bears the text "Kungliga Vetenskapsakademien" above the north star emblem of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The medal has a diameter of 66 mm (2.265 inches).

Accompanying the prize is the original 5.375 x 1.125 x 5.25 inches red leather presentation case, gilt-stamped "Paul A. Samuelson." An embossed red seal representing the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences appears below the signatures of the "Akademiens Preses" and the "Akademiens Sekreterare." A separate protective fabric-bound cover with a matching monogram protects the portfolio and measures 10.875 x 15.25 inches.

Biography: Paul A. Samuelson was the first American Nobel laureate in economics and the foremost academic economist of the 20th century. His doctoral thesis from Harvard entitled "Foundations of Economic Analysis" demonstrated how mathematical analysis could be used to solve economic problems. It was the basis on which modern economics is built. He then used this foundation to solve problems on many economic topics including business cycles, trade, stock prices, and economic stability.

Unusually for an academic economist, Samuelson was also adept at communicating with laypeople. He advised President Kennedy, members of Congress and the Federal Reserve Board. His textbook "Economics" was one of the most widely used college textbooks in the history of American education and the best-selling textbook for nearly 30 years. It was translated into 20 languages, bringing him international renown. Samuelson also wrote a regular column for Newsweek magazine that clearly explained economic issues of the day. Between his academic research and his popular writing, he redefined modern economics.

Samuelson was a supportive colleague who is credited with building the MIT economics department into one of the best in the world.

In addition to the Nobel Medal, Samuelson was the first recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal, awarded by the American Economic Association to the most outstanding economist under the age of forty. In 1996, President Clinton awarded him the National Science and Technology Medal. At the ceremony, the medal's ribbon would not fit over Samuelson's head prompting President Clinton to quip that his brain was too big.

Condition: The medal is in excellent condition with high-relief details. The presentation box's exterior exhibits light scratching and wear are throughout. The interior has a small stain and dent on the satin interior lining at the lid. The portfolio has some wear and soiling throughout. When open, a small cut is visible at the fold of the spine near the top that does not affect the diploma. Light foxing is present on the diploma pages, with minimal toning of the paper present. The exterior and interior of the protective fabric cover have minor soiling and a few small marks throughout.
