Description

1947 John Bates Clark Medal presented to Paul A. Samuelson, its inaugural recipient

John Bates Clark Medal Presented to Paul Samuelson. Named for one of the founders and former presidents of the American Economic Association, this John Bates Clark medal was awarded to Paul A. Samuelson, the inaugural recipient of what is still considered one of the most prestigious awards bestowed by the AEA. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of John Bates Clark with the text "John Bates Clark Award" following the curvature of the medal above his head. The name "Fred M. Torrey" and text "SC:47" is at the edge along the portrait's right shoulder. The reverse bears a well-sculpted male figure flanked by wheat-"Terra"-and gears-"Labor." The text "American / Economic / Association / Founded 1885" is at the lower left portion above "Awarded To / Paul A. Samuelson / 1947." The diameter measures 3 inches with a thickness of approximately 0.25-inch. The rim reads, "Medallic Art Co. N.Y." and "Bronze." A black presentation case is included, with a plum-colored lining that appears to be satin and velvet. The maker's name, "Medallic Art Co. / New York," is embossed in small letters at the top of the case.

This prestigious award is given annually (formerly biennially) to those under the age of forty who have provided the most significant contributions to the field of economic perception and understanding. Beginning with Paul A. Samuelson in 1947, there have been forty-five recipients, and several have become Nobel Laureates-Samuelson being one. Before receiving this award, Samuelson published his first paper in economics at age 21. He would receive an MA from Harvard University in 1936, followed by a PhD in 1941. The same year he won this medal, Samuelson also published his first major work, Foundations of Economic Analysis, which utilized mathematics to analyze economic issues.

Condition: Very minor wear, soiling, and light scratching throughout the medal. The case has a sticker reading "#13" on the top lid, with light wear to the exterior. The case's clasp has a small amount of oxidation. Overall fine condition.
