Description
1793 Thomas Paine Satirical Hanging Token. Copper, 30mm. A British "Conder" halfpenny token, circa 1790s, featuring a man hanging on the gallows on the obverse and the legend "End of Pain", and the reverse legend reads "May the Knave of Jacobin Clubs Never Get a Trick". The token has a nice even patina with some minor edge wear, otherwise it is in very good condition. Thomas Paine was something of a "pain" in the British neck. His Common Sense pamphlet did much to stir revolutionary fervor in the colonies, not to mention its sales added to the coffers of the Continental Congress.Auction Info
