Description
William Henry Harrison: Folk Art Flag Banner. Known as the "log cabin and hard cider candidate," Harrison's Log Cabin Campaign featured much of the imagery seen here. A lovely depiction of a picturesque log cabin topped with a waving American flag and soaring eagle grace this 30.75" x 17.875" silk banner. "W.H.H. O.K." can be seen toward the top, and the signature cider barrel appears alongside the house, stags poised among the trees. Identified as number 92 in Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present by Herbert Ridgeway Collins, it is classified as a bandana, but the dimensions lead us to call this a banner. Minor loss is present at the top edge. What was once a possible tear at the center, measuring 11" from the bottom edge up to the middle, has been skillfully repaired and does not detract. Spotting can be seen throughout, with a small area affected by scattered rust-colored staining on the right side. In great condition, the banner maintains incredibly vivid shades of green.
