Washington, Jefferson, & Madison: "Liberty & Independence" Textile. 23 1/2" x 32" circa 1814 cotton textile commemorating the battles of Lake Erie and New Orleans, titled: "Liberty & Independence our Country's Pride & Boast," with American eagle at top with date "1776" on breast shield. Featuring medallion portraits of Jefferson, Washington, and Madison at top, with four ship scenes on either side. Three main scenes in the center depicting battles at Lake Erie, Lake Champlain, and New Orleans. Figure of a woman in lower left corner and figure of a man at lower right corner. This textile is listed as #42 and illustrated on page 65 in "Threads of History" issued by the Smithsonian. Framed to an overall size of 31" x 39 1/2".Condition: Not examined out of frame. Textile is conservation mounted to a fabric covered board. Some fraying and small areas of loss along outer margins; one just touching title and another to Madison's medallion. Somewhat toned but overall, extremely well preserved with rich color and detail.
