Description

Temperance: Cold Water Army 1849 Folk Art Banner. 41" x 44" hand-painted silk banner. It depicts a man and his son standing alongside a stream and waterfall. It is inscribed "Border Section, No. 1 C. of T. Presented by Ladies of Eastport, July 4, 1849." The banner is constructed of two panels stitched together with blue fringe on the sides. "C. of T." might stand for Children of Temperance. We assume Eastport refers to Eastport, Maine. Neal Dow was Governor of Maine where the "Maine Law" banning sale of alcoholic beverages was enacted in 1851. The Cold Water Army movement was also in its hey-day during this period.

Condition: Not examined out of frame. Two relatively small areas of loss along right side, in the blank field. Scattered spotting and wrinkling. A horizontal split crosses the two figures in mid-section. Framed to an overall size of 47" x 53". Will require third party shipping or local pick-up or, with authorization by buyer, it can be removed from the frame and shipped flat or rolled up.
