Polk & Dallas: Highly Significant Large 1844 Campaign Flag Banner. This is the former U. I. "Chick" Harris example, one of perhaps half a dozen known. Along with its Clay & Frelinghuysen mate, it is one of the largest political flags ever produced, measuring 49.5" x 30.5" (elegantly custom-framed to 57" x 38"). All Polk campaign items are rare, particularly display pieces, and this is one of the very best.There is moderate overall aging as shown, but no serious condition issues. It was intended for horizontal display and still has the original five fabric loops for suspension across the top. Original fine stitching around the perimeter. The flag sold for almost $50,000 in one of the Harris Collection auctions nearly twenty years ago. It was the most expensive item in the eight auctions of that landmark collection. We are aware of a confirmed private sale of an example last year for approximately $150,000.
