James K. Polk: Rare Campaign Flag. James K. Polk has always been a magic name for political collectors, as his campaign novelties of all types range from scarce to very rare. In Threads of History: Americana Recorded on Cloth 1775 to the Present by Herbert Ridgeway Collins, only four textile items for Polk are pictured, as compared to twenty-nine different for Henry Clay! Political flag banners like this one are the most prized Polk campaign artifacts of all. With elements similar to numbers 186 and 188 in Threads of History, this 25.25" x 21.75" flag features a large five-pointed star formed by a constellation of twenty-six smaller stars. The text "Polk and Dallas/ Democratic Candidates." appears in the white stripes. There is scattered loss throughout, including a couple of small areas affecting a few letters, and the edges are uneven and lightly frayed. The cotton exhibits aging and fading, with minor yellowing and scattered staining throughout. A couple of brown stains are at the upper-right edge, and a small wear mark is near the bottom edge. Considering the age of this flag, it is still in very good condition, with the blues and reds remaining vibrant and the text bold.
