Description

Horatio Seymour: Rare Greenback Portrait Flag. Seymour, the "Reluctant Candidate", appears on this rare 12" x 18" campaign flag from 1868. The unusual design shows him in place of Salmon Chase on a greenback, spread diagonally across the stripes. His portrait is surrounded by the words "Horatio Seymour for President". The bill has various campaign slogans. The central one advocates payment of the bonds issued to finance the Civil War in greenbacks, rather than gold, as advocated by the Republicans. It demands "Equal Taxation One Currency [for] The Laborer, and the Office Holder, The Producer and the Bondholder." There are 37 stars arranged in an striking pattern. The flag has moderate to heavy, uniform soiling, some loss and separations, as shown, not affecting the central design.
