Description
Horatio Seymour: Choice Greenback Campaign Flag. 12 1/4" x 8" cotton parade flag from 1868. The central design has a $5 greenback with portrait of the 1868 Democratic nominee inscribed: "For President Horatio Seymour". The rest of the bill has the Goddess of Liberty from atop the Capitol building and a plethora of campaign slogans related to the issue of war bond repayments. The Democrats advocated repayment of these bonds in U.S. currency rather than in gold coin, or specie. The canton has an unusual pattern of stars. There are three nail holes along the hoist from previous attachment to a stick. This is an exceptionally clean example.Auction Info
