Description

Henry Clay: A Spectacular Hand-Painted Banner from the 1844 Campaign. Certainly one of the premier political banners surviving from this era. It reflects the Nativist and Protectionist viewpoint of many of Clay's supporters, with the wonderful legend below his portrait:

AMERICA THOU ART OUR COUNTRY AND THEE WILL WE SUPPORT
We are labourers and would not that our children's bread should be cast to the dogs of foreign nations.

Hand-painted on canvas and in very good display condition, with the original wood dowel across the bottom. It has undergone a professional restoration including scattered bits of in-painting (less than 1% of the surface area), relining, and applying a clear coat on the surface for stability.

This previously unknown banner measures a substantial 45" x 55", and would be a worthy centerpiece for the most sophisticated collector.
