George Washington: Memorial Kerchief. A commemorative cotton kerchief (c. 1806) measuring approximately 22 7/8" x 12 1/4", framed to an overall size of 33 1/2" x 22 1/2". Printed in blue onto cotton, the design memorializes George Washington and bears the titled sentiment: "The Love of Truth, Mark the Boy / The Effect of Principle Behold the Man," a moralizing maxim reflecting 19th-century reverence for Washington's character and virtue.The composition unites portraiture and patriotic aphorism, creating an appealing example of Washingtoniana intended for both remembrance and display.
Condition: Not examined out of the frame. Minor creasing, presumably from backing. Two pinholes to the right side. Area of wear to bottom left side, with some text affected. Even layer of toning.
