Description
Commemorating the Inauguration of Our First President and Government
George Washington: Circa 1789 Presidential Bandanna. Featured as Threads #9, this cotton bandanna was likely issued in 1789, or very shortly thereafter. It measures 20" x 19" and is printed in red on white (now toned to beige ). The central vignette depicts "The Honorable The Representatives of the United States in Congress Assembled", flanked by allegorical figures of Commerce and Agriculture. This is surrounded by portraits of Franklin, Columbus, Wm. Penn (at the bottom) and "Geo. Washington, Esq. President of the United States", "John Adams, L.L.D. Vice President of the United States of America" and "Tho. Jefferson, Esq. Secretary of State", along the top. There is a hole to the left of Adams, some splitting along the right side and lower right corners, two small holes in the top corners and a 2" tear at the top and above Washington's portrait, repaired with thread. The whole is backed with coarsely spun linen, indicating it may have been part of a bedcover at one time. There is a split in the central vignette, affecting one portrait. It is somewhat faded and the contrast only fair to good. The portraits are all good shape and the overall condition, considering its age and extreme rarity, is good or better. To put this item in perspective, Congress met at Federal Hall from 1789 to 1790. Prior to taking the Oath of Office on the balcony of Federal Hall, John Adams (already sworn-in a couple of weeks earlier) introduced Washington to the Congress. After the swearing-in ceremony, Washington delivered his inaugural address in front of Congress. All this transpired at Federal Hall on April 30, 1789. Washington textiles dating from his presidency (in contrast to circa 1783 copper-plate yard goods) truly qualify as museum pieces and rarely surface in the market. To have one with jugate portraits of the first President and Vice President, Washington and Adams, is amazing. This one has their successor, as well, third President Thomas Jefferson.
