Description

George Washington: A Rare 1801-Dated Memorial Linen Sampler. The central device is a funeral urn marked "GW," as seen on various Washington memorial items. To the left, "He is in Glory", and to the right, "The World in Tears". Below is embroidered, "Mute be the voice of eulogy / For who can justly speak his praise / But the sad tear that fills each eye / A deathless monument shall raise." Washington died in December 1799, but the nation remained in mourning for several years, an outpouring of affection and respect unequaled until the passing of Lincoln in 1865.

The typical design features the alphabet and numerals, along with a floral vine, a tree, and a row of suspended hanging baskets. A finished work, it has a zigzag stitched border. Across the center is embroidered the name of the maker, Olive Cobb, and the 1801 date. Nice overall display condition: the colors are somewhat evenly faded, and the background has typically toned to an even tan shade. Several minor holes in the field are barely noticeable against the neutral backing. Custom framed. 13" x 13".
