Description
Embroidered Eagle & Flags on Silk, Mounted on Paper Backing, Circa 1876. 28" x 37" patriotic silk embroidery panel, likely Chinese or Japanese export for the American market, circa 1876. Similar to examples depicted on pages 194 & 195 in Collins reference, "Threads of History." A large, vividly worked emblematic composition featuring a fierce bald eagle in flight above a Federal shield, backed by an exuberant spray of American flags with tassels, all executed in colored silk threads on a dark silk ground. This class of patriotic needlework often produced in Asian ports for American clientele and brought home as souvenirs, remains among the most decorative and visually bold of "Americana" textile pictures, combining folk-style heraldic imagery with impressive scale and needlework density. Probably made for the Centennial of 1876.Condition: Paper-backing with typical age wear for silk, vibrant colors - although with light expected creasing and scattered loss consistent with display and storage.
