Description

[Stephen A. Douglas] Folk-Art Campaign Banner from Connecticut. 47.5" x 46" light canvas banner with patriotic eagle holding riband that reads "North South," inscribed "North-Stamford Democratic Union Club." Colors include red, blue, black, green, and yellow. Silk rosettes attached to top two corners. Scalloped silk borders or trim. Attached to wooden rods at top and bottom (partially detached at top). Some loss to trim, but generally in fine condition. We date this to the 1856-1864 period, but feel it is most likely a Buchanan or Douglas piece. It briefly hung in a Greenwich, Connecticut "watering hole" (donated by a local patron), but came on the market after the restaurant ceased operation.
