Description

[Jefferson Davis and the Confederate States] "Don't Tread on Me" Flag. Threads of History #324, 24" x 18" yellow cotton, printed in black and orange. It depicts a rattlesnake captioned "Dont Tread On Me." Although attributed by Collins as a pro-Copperhead piece from 1864, we conclude differently. "Copperhead" was a pejorative term and something the Peace Democrats did not want to be called, either in word or image. The image and slogan on this flag were first used in the American Revolution by the colonists. The Confederate States held up the American Revolution as a model and template for their declaring independence and separating from the Northern states. This flag appears to be of Civil War vintage. In addition, the plants in the background, including cattail, suggest a Southern setting. Small piece missing upper right edge and top left, nail holes along hoist are signs of attachment to a pole and use as a parade flag. Normal aging. Good condition overall. No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
