Description

[Henry Clay]: Native American Flag and Parade Sash. 52" x 29" cotton flag issued in 1844. The canton has an eagle, shield, draped flags, twenty-six stars and a ballot box captioned "Twenty-One Years". The latter slogan does not refer to the voting age requirement, but a proposal that immigrants needed to reside in the U.S. for twenty-one years before they could become naturalized citizens. The stripes originally contained the slogan "Beware of Foreign Influence" but, for reasons unknown, the first two words were cut out and a patch stitched over the empty space, so it now simply says "Foreign Influence". There are some areas of loss along the right side, as shown. Normal aging with some "dusting" and light damp stains. Strong colors. We sold a complete example in our February 2020 sale for a record $93,750. That example and this one were found together with a 90" long wool parade sash with thirteen "sequin" stars and a red silk rosette with brass eagle. Some mothing to the sash. The silk on the rosette is brittle and two small pieces have broken off.

The Nativist or Native American movement was the precursor to the American or Know-Nothing Party. They were most prominent in Philadelphia, site of anti-immigrant violence. In the election of 1844, they supported the Whig candidate for President, Henry Clay.
