Description

William Jefferson Clinton: June 2, 1994, Presidential Administration Flag. 36" x 48", (41" x 50.5" including the 2.5" knotted gold/silver fringe on three sides). The U.S. President's flag is entirely hand embroidered made in extremely limited numbers exclusively by the 'flag ladies' at the Philadelphia Defense Personnel Support Center (PDPSC) as directed by the U.S. Army Support Activity. This flag was made for the William Jefferson Clinton administration on June 2, 1994, at government cost of $8,922.40. This smaller sized flag serves as the Chief Executives traveling flag, also known as a boat flag. It is identical in design to its larger variant which is made exclusively for display in the Oval Office. This travel flag would appear behind President Clinton at various locations within the White House and on White House grounds, also traveling with the President on Air Force One for his appearances at home and abroad. The display and use of the President's flag is restricted to official functions only by Executive Order #10016. Misuse or reproduction of the flag is strictly prohibited and enforced through U.S. Code 18-USC-713 which likely accounts for its high cost of construction and rarity within the collector marketplace. A similar travel flag for the Clinton administration sold at Sotheby's in 2002 for over $41,000!

Provenance: This flag originally belonged to premier U.S. flag collector and vexillologist Robert Banks. Documentation includes copies of the NSN requisition identification showing the cost to manufacture the flag, also the shipping label from the PDPSC which confirms the corresponding NSN identification.

Condition Report: The flag fabric is a dark blue rayon field with silk embroidery thread. It is entirely hand-embroidered at DPSC per specification under Executive Order #10860. Design and color pattern follows the Truman flag design in effect since 1945. Condition is excellent in every consideration. It is expensively and properly archivally housed in a handsome 50" x 61" frame ready for display. The size and weight of this lot will require special shipping and handling. Item not examined out of frame.
