Description
U.S. Style "LOVE" Flag from San Francisco - Circa 1968. This 34" X 54" cotton Love Flag was produced in the 1960s. They were made as a response to the nascent counterculture movement then prevalent in the San Francisco Bay Area, especially in the cities of San Francisco and Berkeley, California. It was part of a series of Love, Peace and Ecology flags made by the West Coast's largest full facility flag maker, the Paramount Flag Company.The Counterculture movement of the 1960s was an anti-establishment cultural phenomenon. The movement's spiritual acumen was San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Although it began in the US in the mid-1960s it spread worldwide, and the effects of the Counterculture movement have been ongoing to the present day.
This Love Flag was made, by utilizing the stripes to produce United States flags, but with a large white heart replacing the traditional stars on the U.S. flag. This was thought by some to be either disrespectful or unpatriotic, but Paramount was simply exercising their 1st amendment rights to respond to consumer demand.
Paramount flags made during the 1960's may be identified by the company's practice of placing the labels on the reverse of the heading. In the mid 1970's they started placing all their markings on the obverse heading. This was the case until the 1990's when they moved their markings to the lower obverse.
These flags had limited distribution, mainly in the Haight-Ashbury head shops. Terrific item for flag collectors as well as pop culture enthusiasts.
