Description
Henry Clay: A Marvelous Rare and Highly Distinctive 1844 Campaign Flag Banner. The example pictured in Threads of History resides in an institutional collection, and while we have heard of another extant example, this is the first time we have ever seen this great flag "in the flesh." It features a unique "folk art" portrait of Clay, and in each corner of the canton are 1.75" circles, each with a slogan: "A National Currency / Revenue and Protection / Encouragement to Agriculture / Manufactures and Commerce." Impressive 29.5" x 25" size. Condition is excellent for a flag of this period: No damage; typical fading of the red stripes, but still strong; the canton area is in great shape, with little if any fading of the blue. A few minor bits of staining are unobtrusive and inconsequential. As the photograph shows, the flag has excellent display presence. One of the most important political flags we have ever offered, and a perhaps never-to-be-repeated opportunity for the advanced collector.Auction Info
