Description

Virgil Earp: Signed City License for Madame Emma Parker's "House of Ill Fame" in Tombstone. The license itself is important and engaging; however, the "icing on the cake" is found on the back, a notation by Virgil Earp: "Refused Payment/ VW Earp/ City Tax Collector." Virgil Earp's signatures are very rare, and it is especially desirable in this form. This document dates from barely a month before the O.K. Corral confrontation. Virgil was shot and severely wounded, presumably in retaliation, on December 28th as he walked from the Oriental Saloon to his room.

Condition: Light toning is present, with a few old fold lines. The right and top edges have minor tears, and a small hole is at the center of the left side. On the back next to Earp's inscription is a stain with additional paper remnants. Overall good condition.
