Description
Van Buren & Johnson: Two Great 1836 Ballots. Consists of: (1) A 3" x 7" ballot for the Van Buren & Johnson ticket that shows a man carrying a pig, exclaiming "Going the whole Hog" while the pig snorts "Pork 10 cts. per lb." The cartoon and captions indicate both an enthusiasm for the Democrats and a celebration of good times which abruptly ended a year later in the Panic of 1837, one of the worse depressions in American history. The ballot has edge chipping and slight loss at folds, repaired on verso with archival tape. (2) A 3" x 6.25" ballot that depicts all four presidential candidates in 1836 (Van Buren, Harrison, Webster, and White) riding pigs in a presidential race. Each candidate is identified and they make comments regarding their prospects for election. Van Buren is in the lead. Those supporting the runners-up have the exhortation "Go it, ye Cripples!" It has a vertical separation with an old repair and minor loss at bottom.Auction Info
