Description

James G. Blaine: Original Signed Thomas Nast Cartoon. Thomas Nast was America's greatest caricaturist and cartoonist who was active during the Civil War and for some time afterwards. A staunch Republican, he was not above directing his acid pen to errant members of that party. In this 13" x 9" ink "mock-up" signed by Nast and dated 1888, Blaine, the Plumed Knight, appears as a stump speaker who is failing to persuade Uncle Sam with his position. It is mounted on board with two paper side panels. By pulling back the side panel on the right, more of the cartoon, as originally drawn, appears. It is signed a second time by Nast and shows the sun about to beat Blaine over the head with a club labeled "Facts" while a sheath of papers labeled "My Record" appears in Blaine's coat pocket. The back of the item has a handwritten excerpt of Vice President Morton's speech "Our American Gladstone". This unique item is interesting on several levels, especially exposing the editorial process and artistic revisions.
