Description

Henry Clay: Clay Enforces a "Gag Rule". This very rare 9" x 12" cartoon from the election of 1832 was published by David Claypoole Johnston. Clay was offended by the repeated charges of "corrupt bargain" dating back to 1824 and here offers his "cure for calumny" by sewing together Jackson's mouth. Titled "Symptoms Of A Locked Jaw", it reprints a line from Hamlet: "Might stop a hole, to keep the wind away."
