Description
Daniel Webster: Fugitive Slave Law Cartoon. Daniel Webster was excoriated for his part in the passage of the Compromise of 1850 that included a pledge to actively enforce the Fugitive Slave Law. Southern bounty hunters came North to locate and retrieve runaway slaves, often meeting with stiff, local resistance. In this 18" x 14" cartoon, titled "Practical Illustration of the Fugitive Slave Law", Webster clutches the Constitution while acting as the slave catcher's horse. They try to capture slave Susanna with rope and chain, while William Lloyd Garrison and other abolitionists try to protect her. The Temple of Liberty appears in the background. Webster says: "This, though Constitutional, is extremely disagreeable." It is signed "E.C." and is in excellent condition.Auction Info
