Description

Andrew Jackson: Superb Anti-Jackson Cartoon. Andrew Jackson had many critics and was often caricatured and described as a vainglorious despot. This 18.75" x 12.5" hand-colored cartoon falls into the category. It is titled "The Model of a Republican President" and was published in New York by A. Imbert. Jackson is shown trying to model himself on Napoleon while counselors attend to his every need. We identify Martin Van Buren, Treasury Secretary Louis McLane, Attorney General Roger Taney and Amos Kendall. A beaming Jackson exclaims: "Oh! By the Eternal. I'll take the responsibility. Taney give me the whole of it. It does certainly add to the resemblance. Ha! Ha! Ha! I begin to see it myself. I feel like Napoleon, I thirst for glory!! Down with the Monster! Down with the Senate! Glory!!" This circa 1832 cartoon is truly exceptional.
