Description

Andrew Jackson: 1836 Cartoon. This 19.5" x 12.5" cartoon lithographed by H. R. Robinson of New York deals with the payment of war reparations by France, pursuant to the Treaty of 1831 that dictated compensation for depravations caused during the Napoleonic Wars. The two countries had almost gone to war in 1835, but the crisis was resolved and President Jackson celebrates the receipt of 25M francs. Twenty-five rulers are identified by number and a corresponding key below the title. Van Buren provides the music. King William IV applauds while King Louis Philippe lands on his derriere. It is titled: "Grand Virginia Reel and Scamperdown at the White House Washington. All the World Completely Discumgalligumfricated." Folded in quarters, it has been backed with rice paper and has some inked notations on the verso which bleed through.
