Description
Abraham Lincoln: Rare Printing of the Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. There are two versions of Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The first was made public on September 22, 1862. It stressed military necessity as the basis for the proclamation. The revised and final document became official on January 1, 1863 and was widely published. This earlier version is a 2 1/8" x 3 1/8" 7-page booklet in pink titled wraps, titled: "The Proclamation of Emancipation, By the President of the United States, To Take Effect January 1st, 1863." It was published in December 1862 by John Murray Forbes, a Boston Unionist who helped to raise troops, including the famous 54th Massachusetts Regiment. The booklet was intended for distribution to the troops who, in turn, could distribute copies to slaves in regions of the South occupied by Union forces. It has the original thread binding and a quote dealing with slavery uttered by Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens on the back cover. Some light soiling to the cover with a faint vertical fold of no consequence. A very desirable and historic imprint.Auction Info
