Description
In charge of the White House Taping System
[Richard M. Nixon]: Watergate Witness Alexander Butterfield TLS. Alexander Porter Butterfield (b. 1926) was hired by the Nixon White House, working initially under H. R. Haldeman. He was promoted to deputy assistant to the President, helping to organize visits and set up briefings. One of his responsibilities was the maintenance of the White House taping system. He had no involvement with the Watergate break-in or cover-up and was never charged with same. Upon Nixon's re-election, he left the White House to become head of the S.A.A. He did testify before the Ervin Committee investigating the break-in and, upon direct questioning, admitted the existence of the taping system, leading inexorably to Nixon's resignation. We offer a two-page Typed Letter Signed "Alex Butterfield", May 25, 1977, written to Palm Springs dentist David A. Marcus regarding the doctor's request for an autograph on an AP article dealing with Butterworth. He does not want Marcus to reprint the article in a book Marcus was planning, as the comments could be taken out of context. He tries to set forth the facts clearly in this letter. Some great content, including: "... Mr. Nixon, in my opinion, most assuredly knew about the first Watergate break-in (if not the second as well) before the fact. I base that on an intimate knowledge of 'the White House system' and Mr. Nixon's practice of totally supervising all that went on, major and minor... I'm amazed at how many Americans don't yet understand the extent to which Richard Nixon supervised every operation, every activity, every program and every plan. It's hard for me to comprehend how many people, in light of all that's been revealed to date, can still believe his aides, 'unbridled', got him into trouble. That's such a fable!" On the second page, Butterfield expounds at length on Nixon's ability and potential which were overshadowed by his "King Richard - Ruler of the Free World - I'll show those bastards' complex". A very insightful look into one of America's most complex and controversial presidents. Excellent condition.Auction Info
