Description

Zachary Taylor: Cameo Brooch. Some well-heeled lady in 1848 may have worn this lovely 1 5/8" x 1 7/8" cameo brooch of Zachary Taylor. The military hero and Whig candidate appears in full uniform, facing right, appearing somewhat stern. It is similar to an example we sold in our last sale that had descended in the Taylor family. We notice that the gold mounting, when viewed from the side, undulates in conformity with the contours of the cameo medium. We believe noted American sculptor Hiram Powers produced some of these, although this example is unsigned.
