Description

Lewis Cass: Unique Campaign Paper & Glass Plaque. 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" glass plaque housing a hand-colored military portrait of "Gen. Lewis Cass", set within a paper mat with gold-stamped design elements. The reverse contains a printed biography of Cass that takes up the entire sheet. The components of this piece include the portrait, mat and biography, the edges of which are wrapped around and affixed to the front, holding everything together. Two cracks in the glass, as shown. Similar to the glass plaques issued by E. T. H. Anthony in 1848, housing engraved portraits of statesmen, copied after daguerreotypes. We recall seeing this piece at the home of auctioneer Ben Corning of Framingham, Massachusetts a gazillion years ago (45, if you ask). None have appeared since and we know of no other examples. From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
