Description

George Washington: Epistles, Life and Memory. This lot has three books related to Washington, including a work containing fraudulent letters. This is a leather-bound copy of "Epistles Domestic, Confidential, and Official from General Washington" published in New York in 1796. The first seven letters are contemporary fakes designed to discredit Washington which he described as "base forgeries". It includes a frontispiece engraving by Rollinson. The front cover is reattached with some chipping and cracking. Howes W-133. It is sold together with "Memory of Washington", the first biography published after Washington's death, printed in 1800 by Oliver Farnsworth of Newport (lacking front cover) and Ramsey's "The Life of Washington" (first edition, published in London in 1807, covers detached with some loose pages).
