Description
Franklin Pierce: A Highly Desirable Pewter Shaving Mirror Dating from His Presidency. Of similar materials and construction to two varieties made earlier for Zachary Taylor, it is undoubtedly from the same maker. However, it clearly does not date from the Mexican War era, because Pierce's high-relief portrait is surrounded by "General Franklin Pierce / President of the United States". With the exception of a couple of widely distributed brass tokens, Pierce items are among the most elusive for any American president or candidate. Sullivan lists only nine varieties, including this mirror. We can recall seeing only one other example of the mirror "in the flesh." It could well be an 1852 campaign item, as during this era it was not uncommon to picture one's preferred candidate and presumptively identify him as "President..." on political items. Construction is in two pieces, with the mirror set into an ornamented pewter shell case, with a tight-fitting pewter shell lid. Diameter: 96 mm (3"). Excellent condition, with a dull surface patina as always seen on the more common Taylor companion pieces.Auction Info
