Description

Extensive Collection of Washington, D.C. Calling Cards. Ninety-one engraved calling cards from the 1865-1870 period, including cabinet members, generals, senators, congressmen, diplomats, jurists, and others. Many of these come in pairs or sets, with spouses and family members. Some of the cards have actual signatures in lieu of printed ones. All have glue and paper remnants on verso from prior mounting in album owned by Augusta Foot, granddaughter of Vermont Senator Solomon Foot. Miss Foot must have been the social butterfly and quite popular. Highlights include: Elizabeth Cady Stanton, five members of the Supreme Court including Chief Justice David Davis (Lincoln's campaign manager in 1860 and executor of his estate), seven current and former cabinet members including Simon Cameron (Lincoln's Secretary of War), eight generals including U. S. Grant, Sherman, Butler, Banks, and Schofield. An unusual grouping, reflective of a bygone era, the Gilded Age.
