Description

Anti-Stamp Act: Very Rare 1766 Brass Shank Button Picturing William Pitt. Struck in copper and measuring 25 mm in diameter, it features a profile of British Prime Minister William Pitt surrounded by the words "No Stamp Act," with his name and date 1766 below the portrait. This 1765 tax law was particularly offensive to the American colonies, and was a major galvanizing factor leading to the American Revolution. We are certainly not aware of any other wearable item expressing a political sentiment, such as a button or badge, from this early time. It is quite reasonable to argue that this may be the earliest American political item.

Condition: An even chocolate brown patina. Original integral shank. Possibly excavated, however the sharp details and lack of surface corrosion strongly suggest otherwise. A slight abrasion at 5 o'clock near the last "T" in PITT minimally detracts from the otherwise sharp details and smooth lightly worn surfaces. We have sold five examples for prices ranging up to $8,900. This is clearly without question the best example of all the ones we have offered!
