Description
Lincoln & Hamlin: Magnificent Jugate Ribbon. 2.875" x 10.125" pink silk ribbon with woodcut portraits of the 1860 Republicans. Titled: "Republican Ticket." It reads: "'Honest Old Abe.'/ For President,/ Abraham Lincoln./ 'Liberty and Union,/ Now and Forever,/ One and Inseparable.'/ Vice President,/ Hannibal Hamlin./ 'Freedom of Public Lands/ To Actual Settlers.'" There is a similar single portrait ribbon of this design for Lincoln, but only two examples of the jugate. The other example, on deep aqua silk, was offered at a Troy, Ohio, country auction a number of years ago. It sold in the $12-13,000 price range to a Lincoln specialist with the best collection of 1860 and 1864 campaign ribbons in the country. There are some werf threads (or picks) missing at the bottom, affecting the two slogan lines (still readable when displayed); otherwise, condition is excellent. A true gem. From the Merrill C.
