Description

Lewis Cass: Portrait Ribbon. Lewis Cass, Zachary Taylor's defeated opponent in 1848, has always been one of the toughest candidates for political collectors. Except for a couple of scarce but obtainable campaign medals, nearly all types of Cass campaign items are very rare. At the top of the ladder are silk campaign ribbons, essential not only to round out a selection of Cass campaign items but, like the Cox & Roosevelt jugate button, necessary to complete a continuum of political ribbons which began with the candidates of the 1830s and continued through the 20th century. The first of this particular ribbon that we've seen, this example does not disappoint. The ribbon is titled "The Freedom of the Seas" followed by a small ship with full sails just below. A detailed portrait of Cass is featured at the center above the inscription "For President,/ Gen. Lewis Cass,/ The Hero and Statesman./ For Vice President./ Gen. W.O. Butler." The ribbon measures 2 ¾" x 6 ¾" . Some expected soiling and aging are present with very light staining. The top right corner has a ¾" tear. A minute worn spot is barely visible at the right edge. Overall, this ribbon is in great condition, only adding to its desirability. No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
