Description
John Tyler: Unique Presidential Silk Ribbon. 3" x 6 1/2" silk ribbon for "The President of the United States. Liberty and Independence. John Tyler." Published and sold in New York by E. P. Whaite. A framed portrait of our first accidental President is the central image. The bottom has a lengthy quote with Classical allusions asserting that the American people will support their President in the proper discharge of his duties, despite "all the assaults and bitter revilings of faction." He also affirms his dedication to maintaining "the supremacy of the Constitution and Laws...". Tyler did indeed attract a lot of criticism during his tenure and, despite his self-proclaimed allegiance to the Constitution and Laws, joined the Confederacy at the outset of the Civil War and served in the CSA Congress. While this is a "standard" design, we have never seen an example with the additional quote at the bottom. A nice clean example of what may be the only specimen extant.Auction Info
