Description
Jefferson Davis: Inaugural Badge Rosette and Confederate States of America Flag. The meager resources and limited manufacturing capabilities of the wartime South were generally reserved for the fledgling Confederacy's very survival. Out of dire necessity, the production of military goods took precedence over generating "extras" such as political memorabilia. A very small number of novelties associated with President Jefferson Davis and/or Vice President Alexander Stephens were made during the Civil War. Such items are almost non-existent today. As the war was a two-sided affair, any comprehensive collection of political Americana should include a Confederate item if at all possible. This fine badge is a superb example of this elusive genre. Identified by Sullivan as C-1861-17, this piece consists of a sepia image of Jefferson Davis mounted to a light blue silk cockade, 2 1/2" in diameter. Around the portrait are the legends, "The Right Man in the Right Place" and "Our First President." The silk cockade is pinned to a silk Confederate States of America Flag with what appears to be a brad nail. The flag features seven gold stars on a blue canton and red and white bars, and it measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/4". The bottom edge of the flag has a 1 1/2" tear with another small tear beside it where creased. The piece has light creasing throughout with some fading of the silk and scattered staining (possibly a few drops of blood near the pinned cockade). The reverse has some toning and discoloration. Despite its imperfections, this piece is still in lovely condition for its age, the delicate silk and Davis' portrait remaining quite attractive for display. No minimum bid.
