Description
Horace Greeley: Simply the Finest Single-Portrait Ribbon Known for this Important 1872 Democratic Candidate. Greeley was swamped by Grant's re-election juggernaut, and comparatively few campaign novelties were issued in support of his doomed candidacy. Ribbons are particularly elusive: Sullivan & Fischer list only four word ribbons, only one of which, a memorial ribbon at that, were they able to picture. The great Joe Brown collection contained a jugate variety, the only known example. One other portrait ribbon is known, a purple ribbon with portrait and "The Sage of Chappaqua," in gold, of which two examples have surfaced. This terrific "Nation's Choice" design is the only known example, and in beautiful condition. For strictest accuracy we note tiny holes at the top where a straight pin once passed through to attach it to the wearer's coat. One of the top ribbons in the Berman Collection, and for that matter, one of the top political ribbons in the hobby! 2.5" x 5". From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
